A senior candidate from Reform UK is facing backlash for controversial remarks suggesting that individuals of non-Christian faiths should consume bacon as a display of commitment to Christianity. Chris Parry, who is running for the mayoral position in Hampshire and the Solent for the party, made these comments in response to an article discussing migrants allegedly being baptized in hotel bathtubs to secure asylum.
In a post made in October, Dr. Parry suggested that people of other religious backgrounds should eat bacon for a month to demonstrate their allegiance to Christianity. Additionally, he shared an image of a microwave labeled for Halal food only and humorously commented that he would put sausages in it, despite acknowledging that pork is not permissible under Islamic dietary laws.
The former senior Royal Navy officer reiterated his call for potential Christian converts to consume pork for a month in another post in November. This statement was in line with a story quoting the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, discussing church baptisms for asylum seekers, emphasizing the need for thorough verification of asylum claims made on religious grounds.
The controversy surrounding Dr. Parry has intensified pressure on Nigel Farage to remove him from his position within the party. Dr. Parry had previously come under fire for making inflammatory remarks about David Lammy and questioning the loyalty of other public figures from minority ethnic backgrounds.
Responding to the criticism, Dr. Parry defended his comments as lighthearted banter and emphasized the importance of verifying asylum claims based on religious grounds. He also stated his commitment to calling out public figures whom he believes do not prioritize loyalty to Britain in their actions, regardless of their background or beliefs.
