“Government Set to Ban Trail Hunting Amid Criticism”

Date:

The impending prohibition of trail hunting by the Government has triggered strong reactions from the Conservative Party and Reform UK. Activists have persistently highlighted concerns about foxes being mauled by dogs during these hunts. According to Devon and Cornwall’s assistant Chief Constable, Matt Longman, trail hunting often serves as a cover for illegal fox hunting. The Government is poised to enforce this ban in the current parliamentary session as part of its upcoming animal welfare strategy.

Trail hunting involves laying a scent trail for hounds to follow instead of pursuing real animals. Initially introduced as a substitute for fox hunting, which was outlawed by the Labour Party in 2004, trail hunting is now being targeted as part of the new animal welfare strategy. This comprehensive strategy includes measures like banning snare traps and implementing a closed hunting season for hares.

Critics, including Nigel Farage and the Conservative Party, have criticized the ban on trail hunting, labeling it as an attack on rural traditions. However, Downing Street defended the decision, asserting that it aligns with the government’s manifesto commitments. Despite welcoming the ban, campaigners have expressed concerns about the absence of specific timelines for implementing these changes.

The recently launched animal welfare strategy not only addresses trail hunting but also aims to combat puppy smuggling and prohibit the use of electric shock collars on pets. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds emphasized the UK’s commitment to animal welfare, describing the strategy as the most ambitious in a generation. The strategy envisions enhancing welfare standards for animals across various settings, from homes to farms to the wild.

The RSPCA’s director of advocacy and prevention, Thomas Schultz-Jagow, commended the government’s initiative, stating that it has the potential to enhance the lives of numerous animals. He emphasized the importance of phasing out cruel practices and highlighted the need for a shift in societal attitudes toward animal welfare. Schultz-Jagow expressed eagerness to collaborate with the government to ensure all animals receive the protection they deserve.
