Cricket legend Robin Smith dies at 62 in Australia

Former England cricket star Robin Smith has passed away at the age of 62 while in Australia for the Ashes series. The news of his death was shared by his close friend and former teammate Kevan James on BBC Radio Solent. Smith, known as ‘The Judge’, had a successful career playing 62 Test matches for England and scoring 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, including nine centuries. He also featured in 71 one-day internationals and played a crucial role in England reaching the World Cup final in 1992. Despite battling health issues, including alcoholism and depression, Smith continued to make significant contributions to Hampshire, where he played for 21 seasons. In a recent interview, he candidly discussed his struggles and emphasized the importance of seeking help and opening up about mental health challenges. Smith’s passing has deeply saddened the cricket community, and his legacy as one of Hampshire’s finest players will be remembered.
