The leader of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is urging the UK to strengthen its relationship with Europe due to concerns over the reliability of Donald Trump as a partner. Paul Nowak emphasized the need for both Leavers and Remainers to move beyond past divisions and address the issues with the current Brexit deal. Nowak suggested considering a UK-EU customs union to facilitate tariff-free trade based on common standards for goods.
This call for closer ties with Europe follows a statement by Wes Streeting, diverging from Keir Starmer’s stance by supporting a customs union agreement with the EU. According to Nowak, the priority is establishing a strong working relationship with the EU, particularly given the uncertainty caused by Trump’s administration. He stressed the importance of maintaining a close economic partnership with European allies, regardless of political affiliations.
The TUC General Secretary emphasized the need for the government to explore all options, including a customs union, to ensure seamless trade for industries like automotive, aerospace, and chemicals that rely on supply chains extending into Europe. Nowak highlighted the impact on everyday consumers, noting rising prices post-Brexit.
Dismissing lingering Brexit divisions, Nowak emphasized the practicality of pursuing a closer trade relationship with the EU for the benefit of working people in the UK. He underscored the importance of rectifying the current Brexit deal and securing the best possible outcome.
