“UK Homes Embracing Internet TV, Traditional Broadcasting at Risk”

Date:

Millions of households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content viewing. A recent study, commissioned by Sky, indicates that by the mid-2030s, nearly all residences could have access to internet-based TV services, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial delivery methods like Freeview.

Various options already exist for watching TV without requiring an aerial, including Sky’s latest streaming offerings and the recently launched Freely service, which is managed by the same team behind Freeview. Freely is now integrated into many new television sets, providing access to live and on-demand programming through an internet connection.

As more internet-connected devices enter homes, a decreasing number of individuals are relying on traditional broadcast TV, with a growing preference for streaming services.

A significant challenge facing Freeview is the potential need for sharing its radio frequencies with mobile operators in the UK after 2031. This could further undermine the current over-the-air transmission system’s viability.

The expenses associated with maintaining the aging infrastructure are mounting, prompting active discussions within the UK government regarding future strategies.

Nick Herm, Group Chief Operating Officer at Sky, emphasized the potential of internet-delivered TV to foster social inclusion. He highlighted the feasibility of transitioning fully to internet-based TV in the 2030s, emphasizing its ability to bridge the digital divide while offering cost-saving opportunities.

Despite the shift towards streaming being welcomed by some, there is resistance among certain individuals. A petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview has garnered over 100,000 signatures, with concerns raised about the necessity of a stable and costly internet connection for streaming compared to the simplicity of Freeview through an aerial.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed her discontent with the potential elimination of Freeview, emphasizing its importance for her entertainment, news consumption, and learning endeavors.

Further updates on the future landscape of television services are anticipated to be released shortly.
