Paul Lim, aged 71, has set a new milestone by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at Ally Pally. This victory solidifies Lim’s position as the oldest player to secure a win at the PDC World Championship. The veteran player triumphed over De Graaf, who is 35 years his junior, with a score of 3-1, causing a major upset and securing his place in the second round. This achievement comes 44 years after Lim’s debut at the World Championship.
Lim’s qualification for Ally Pally marks his return since the 2022 World Championship, where he was eliminated in the first round by Joe Murnam. Despite posting an average of 86.52 with two 180s, Lim managed to outshine a below-par De Graaf.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Lim acknowledged the support of the crowd, stating, “Just making it here is an accomplishment.” Reflecting on his win, he emphasized the importance of capitalizing on opportunities in the game.
In a previous event, Lim secured a notable victory against the current World No.2, Luke Humphries. Should Humphries emerge victorious against Ted Evetts, a potential rematch between Lim and Humphries looms in the second round.
Commenting on Humphries’ skills and dedication, Lim praised the player’s commitment and character, expressing optimism about their possible future encounter.
Known as the “Singapore Slinger,” Lim has become a legendary figure in darts due to his enduring presence in the sport. He made history as the first player to achieve a nine-dart finish in the 1990 BDO World Championship, earning a substantial £52,000 bonus for his accomplishment.
