The UK is set to house one of the most advanced theme parks in the world once Universal Studios in Bedford opens, bringing tens of thousands of jobs and £50billion to the economy.

Thrill-seekers, businesses and politicians alike have reacted with joy to this morning’s news that the attraction will open as soon as 2031. Boasting world leading immersive attractions, rides and thrilling rollercoasters, the 476-acre entertainment resort complex will also be complete with a 500-room hotel for people to rest after an exciting day. The theme park will be Universal’s first in Europe and its sixth around the world. It will stand alongside locations in Orlando, Hollywood, Beijing, Japan, and Singapore.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said of the incredible news: “What a momentous day. What an important day. It’s not just the first one in the United Kingdom – that would be pretty good. It’s the first one across Europe.

“And that is really incredible., and it’s going to put Bedford on the map for millions of people, film lovers, people coming here for fun, people building their careers here, it will create thousands of jobs for the local community.”

The entertainment giant has huge franchises including Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Nintendo and Minions in its US parks, which are all promised in the new resort when its gates finally open six years from now. Until then, nearly 20,000 jobs will be created during the construction period, with another 8,000 jobs across the hospitality and creative industries when it opens.

Mr Starmer added: “Today we closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage. It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country.

“Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive.”

An artist’s rendering of what the park could look like includes a huge lake at the centre, with several ‘lands’ around the outside. The rendering shows three large outdoor rollercoasters, as well as showbuildings to house dark rides, children’s rides and two outdoor theatres.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “From Wicked to Minions, Universal is behind some of the biggest blockbusters of recent years. This landmark investment is fantastic news for our economy, for UK tourism and for the British public, who will be able to enjoy the biggest and best theme park in Europe on their doorstep.

Universal has promised to pump billions of pounds into the incredible entertainment project. Creators have even claimed the park will generate a whopping £50billion for the UK economy. Universal revealed the theme park would also benefit the infrastructure in the surrounding area. Major upgrades have been promised including an expansion of Wixams station and new slip roads on the A421.
