Ed Sheeran ‘makes Pilates look easy’ as his Reformer workout goes viral

Published:

Ed Sheeran might be known for his music career, which has earned him numerous Grammy and Brit awards, but it’s his workout routine that currently has everyone talking.

On 8 April, Pilates studio MK Reformed shared a video on TikTok showing Ed Sheeran effortlessly taking over the reformer machine. The video has now amassed over 400,000 views and left many speechless. One user commented: “Didn’t have Ed Sheeran down as a Pilates princess.” Another added, “Let’s go fit king! Making it look easier than it is”.

Reformer Pilates has become increasingly popular among women and celebrities. However, recently there’s been a shift, with more and more men wanting to try the difficult exercise class. Sheeran is the latest name to join the growing list of male celebrities embracing Pilates, alongside Jack Grealish, Andy Murray, Tiger Woods, LeBron James, and David Beckham.

Reformer Pilates use controlled resistance through a system of adjustable springs and pulleys connected to a rolling carriage. The workout uses different spring resistances to perform a range of exercises, with the machine activated by the tension of the springs.

While reformer Pilates is a very intense workout, onlookers have previously dismissed it as easy. But whether you’re new to the world of fitness or an active gym-goer who just hasn’t tried out reformer Pilates, you can be sure that after just one class, your legs will be shaking, and your core will be aching. The deceiving workout prioritises slow and considered movements and leaves consistent Pilates goers looking toned, lean, and extremely strong.

It seems that many are increasingly choosing reformer Pilates over traditional workouts as it delivers more targeted results. Sol Scheinmann, founder of Pilates Matters, also explains that the rise of reformer Pilates is because it’s excellent for building muscle without putting intense pressure on your joints.

Sol explains: “It’s low-impact, meaning it’s kind to your knees, hips, and spine, but it also delivers serious strength-building benefits, making it an ideal alternative to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or traditional weightlifting.”

Sol encourages everyone to try the workout and offers advice on how newbies can do it. She says: “Starting any new workout can feel intimidating, but reformer Pilates is designed to meet you where you are.”

She continues: “For beginners, starting with a foundational class is the best way to learn proper form and get comfortable with the reformer machine. It’s important to work at your own pace, whether that means dialling up the resistance for strength-building or keeping it light for deep muscle engagement.”

So, are you brave enough to try the celebrity-loved workout? If Ed Sheeran’s new fitness endeavour proves anything, it’s that anyone can do it, pop-star or not.
