Superstar Robbie Williams has extended an olive branch to former arch-rivals Oasis – as he says the band reforming will be “healing” for warring Liam and Noel Gallagher.
Both Robbie and the band are going to be on tour together at the same time this summer, with both playing dates in Manchester. Robbie, who is playing two nights at Co-op Live on June 10 and 11, praised the brothers saying their shows will be momentous. He says: “Liam’s voice is peerless. And he was, and is the voice of a generation. So I think that for British people – and Manchester – it will be a very important moment.”
And in a nod to the famously fractious relationship between Noel and Liam, Robbie adds: “Hopefully it’ll be healing for the lads too.” Robbie says that for his own shows, he wants to “transport” people to another place and make them forget about their worries for two hours. And he said Oasis would take their fans to a similar place.
He said: “Entertainment, at its best, is liberation. And what I want to do with my gigs is take people on the journey and make them forget about their own lives for a bit. And the great thing about the Oasis reunion is they will facilitate that for people.
“But not only that, it will be nostalgia on steroids, and remind us who we were, what we were, how we felt and what we wanted.”
Robbie even said he had been doing a deep dive in Oasis’ back catalogue. “I was just looking at those songs, especially the first three years worth of songs, and it’s literally a lifetime and decades worth of bangers created over that three year period. The songwriting is sensational.”
Robbie’s words would appear to bring the famous feud between him and the Gallagher brothers to a close.
Noel famously described him as the “fat dancer from Take That” , while things escalated when Robbie challenged Liam to a fight at the 2000 Brit Awards.
Ahead of his own shows at Co-op Live, Robbie said he wanted to pull out all the stops. “I’ve set myself out with this giant task in my own mind of being the best entertainer on the planet,” he says.
“And I know that sounds egoic and narcissistic, but I’m sure that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi didn’t want to be the sixth best football player in the world if they were given the opportunity.”
