“£500K Fine for Asda Over Expired Products”

Date:

Asda has been penalized with a £500,000 fine for selling expired products at one of its UK grocery stores. The Barnsley branch was found to have items, such as hummus, pizzas, and curries, which were past their sell-by dates by over two weeks. Following an investigation by the Barnsley Council Trading Standards team, Asda admitted guilt to five offenses under the Food Safety Act and was directed to pay £507,767 in fines and costs on January 29. As a response, the supermarket has implemented new date checking procedures across all its stores.

According to a Barnsley Trading Standards spokesperson, despite improvements made post the incidents, including revised checking systems, retraining, and increased audits at the store, the substantial fine of £100,000 per offense serves as a clear deterrent for non-compliance. Cllr Wendy Cain, the public health representative of Barnsley Council, emphasized the commitment to community safety and the expectation for businesses of all sizes to prioritize selling safe food. The outcome of this case underscores the paramount importance of prioritizing health and safety.

An Asda spokesperson expressed disappointment over the discovery of expired products in their Barnsley store in 2024, acknowledging the failure to meet customer expectations and internal standards. In response to the incident, Asda has introduced a new date code checking process in all its stores to ensure the availability of fresh products for customers.

The incident occurred amidst a slowdown in grocery price inflation, dropping to 4% in January, the lowest rate since April, as reported by market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator. Asda witnessed a 3.7% decline in sales compared to the previous year. Consumer trends show a rising demand for high-protein and high-fiber foods, with notable increases in sales of cottage cheese, fresh fruit, dried pulses, fresh fish, poultry, and chilled yogurt.
