Young darts prodigy Mitchell Lawrie, born in 2010, has amazed Luke Littler with his exceptional skills showcased at the WDF World Championship held at Lakeside. Lawrie, aged 15, made history by defeating Japan’s Tomoya Maruyama to become the youngest player to secure a victory at Lakeside. He then went on to triumph over last year’s semi-finalist Jason Brandon with a remarkable performance, including five maximums and impressive checkouts, setting a high tournament average of 97.21.
Impressed by Lawrie’s talent, Littler expressed his admiration on the WDF Darts Instagram account, stating, “This kid is a joke.” Lawrie, brimming with pride after defeating Brandon in straight sets, shared his excitement, acknowledging the challenge posed by the experienced opponent and the need for a strong start, which he successfully executed.
Lawrie’s fast start, finishing each leg in under 15 darts in the first set, was momentarily halted as he narrowly missed a potential nine-dart finish but smoothly landed a superb 134 checkout. Despite a brief setback as Brandon fought back, Lawrie regained control, attributing his victory to a strong start and the support of the enthusiastic crowd.
Reflecting on the match, Lawrie admitted to momentarily losing focus but regained momentum to secure the win as Brandon intensified his gameplay. Lawrie also mentioned facing distractions during his final darts but remained composed, missing his chance at a double two finish due to external cheering.
Looking ahead, the PDC World Darts Championship is set to begin on December 11, offering fans the opportunity to watch every match live exclusively through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
