“1.8 Million Face Christmas Alone in UK Crisis”

Date:

The Salvation Army has raised concerns that approximately 1.8 million individuals, a number equivalent to the combined populations of Birmingham and Glasgow, will be spending Christmas alone this year, despite not wanting to. A study conducted by YouGov among 4384 UK adults revealed that nearly one in twelve people had experienced a period exceeding a month without engaging in a face-to-face conversation with another adult, excluding brief interactions with strangers.

In response, Minister for Civil Society Stephanie Peacock MP has urged the public to check on their neighbors during the holiday season to ensure that no one is left isolated in their communities. Emphasizing the importance of social connection, she highlighted the government’s efforts to support local charities and volunteers nationwide to enhance community bonds.

One such individual struggling with isolation is Sarah-Jayne, a mother of two from Essex, who found solace after joining her local Salvation Army’s Toddler Group following a leukemia diagnosis. Similarly, Peter, a 75-year-old from East London, found companionship and support at the Salvation Army after experiencing homelessness and health issues.

The Salvation Army, through its network of approximately 600 local churches and community centers, offers practical assistance, expert guidance, and companionship to combat social isolation across the UK. Andrew Wileman, The Salvation Army’s social isolation lead, emphasized the critical need for human connection, especially during the festive season, highlighting that many individuals seek support due to feelings of loneliness and invisibility.

Efforts are underway to address homelessness in the UK, with ministers committing £3.5 billion to halve the number of individuals sleeping rough. The National Plan to End Homelessness aims to achieve key objectives, including reducing long-term rough sleeping, ending the improper use of B&Bs for families, and preventing households from becoming homeless.
